The day before yesterday, I was at my favorite eating place having breakfast at 9am in the morning. As I was having my occasional 'nasi lemak', I saw 2 mothers walk in with a child each. They were friends who got together to have breakfast at the restaurant.
Children being children, the two kids; one boy around 3 or 4 years of age and the girl, around 2 years old, immediately headed for the ice-cream freezer in the restaurant and they 'oohed' at the ice cream inside. The mother of the boy said "no" and went to sit down at a table with her son. The little boy looked up at her with tears in his eyes and with the most woeful look he could muster, ask his mother why he couldn't have any ice-cream. I respected the mother who kepted to her decision and gave her son an explanation as to why he couldn't have ice-cream.
The mother of the little girl however, sat her daughter into the child seat at the table and proceeded to get an ice-cream cone from the freezer for her daughter much to the dismay of the little boy. Naturally, he then asked his mother why he couldn't have ice-cream when his friend was able to have one. Again the mother kept to her principles and denied the child his ice-cream. The mother of the little girl regardless of the decision made by the boy's mother, went ahead and got an ice-cream cone for the little boy, saying that it was okay for him to have one.
I was amazed at the scene which I saw. I personally do not approve of giving little children ice-cream in the mornings for breakfast. I do however don't mind if in such a situation to first make sure the children have a proper breakfast, and then after breakfast to give the child an ice-cream, if at all they still want it after having breakfast.
Do you know that about one third of children in Malaysia are obese!.. Compared to almost half of adults. Mothers, parents, please, please watch your children's diet. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and must be ensured to be the most nutritious I must add.
Why are parents these days giving into their children? Be a parent for goodness sake! Read the books and stick to proper parenting principles to ensure the children are healthy, as well as disciplined and well mannered. No wonder the world is as corrupt as it is and the people are as self centred as they are.
